Ways to Give

Give a Gift of Stock

Donating appreciated securities to Earth Talks Foundation is one of the most tax-efficient ways to support our work — often more so than giving cash.

WHY GIVE STOCK

Why give stock

When you transfer stock, mutual fund shares, or other securities you’ve held for more than a year directly to Earth Talks Foundation, you may be able to claim a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation — a combination that isn’t available when you sell the shares first and donate the proceeds.

Please let us know before you transfer. Brokerage transfers often arrive without the donor’s name attached, so we can’t always tell who a gift came from. Email either co-founder below with your name, the security and number of shares, and the approximate transfer date, so we can confirm receipt and send your tax acknowledgment promptly.

Tax considerations

Appreciated securities: Stock that has gone up in value since you bought it may let you deduct the full fair market value on the date of transfer, while avoiding the capital gains tax you’d owe if you sold it yourself.

Depreciated securities: If a holding has lost value, it’s often better to sell it first and donate the cash proceeds — that way you can claim the capital loss on your taxes in addition to the charitable deduction.

Every donor’s tax situation is different. This page is general information, not tax or legal advice — please talk with your accountant or financial advisor about what makes sense for you.
